How can you let a mass murderer, rapist, or child molester into heaven and not a good moral human being?

Great question!  Thanks!

Imagine that the group comes to the edge of a cliff and has to get across a big chasm between this edge and the edge on the other side.  People start jumping.  Some, honestly, are much better than others and jump much farther.  Some can hardly jump at all and some don’t even care and don’t really try.  But none of them can jump all the way across.

But next to where they are – in plain sight for them to use – is a bridge that is made from a cross laid across the divide.  Anyone who walks on it is readily able to get across.

So God saves us not by how good we are but by Jesus who on the Cross made the bridge for us.  Frankly, some folk are much better than others – but no one measures up to the person God intends us to be.  When we look around and compare ourselves with others, we look good. When we look up and compare ourselves to what God wants us to be, we all fall short.

So not by what we do but what God in Christ has done – taking the penalty for our sin for us – are we able to be cross the gap.  We wonder, am I good enough?  But the question is not how good we are but is the bridge strong enough, built well enough?  It is.  Use it and begin to become in the Lord’s Army, “All that you can be.”
